地球上で最も小さい動物
微生物に次いで、地球上で最も小さい動物は「ティニーコロンバス」と呼ばれる原生生物です。ティニーコロンバスは、わずか0.1ミリメートル程度の大きさしかありません。この微小な生物は、海中に生息しており、直径0.002ミリメートル以下の卵や精子を持っていることが知られています。
テラヘルツ帯に生息する微生物
テラヘルツ帯は、電磁波の周波数帯域の1つで、光と電波の中間に位置する帯域です。このテラヘルツ帯には、微生物の中でも極めて小さいものが生息しています。例えば、「クリプトコッカス属」という真菌は、ひとつの細胞がわずか2～3マイクロメートル（1マイクロメートル＝1/1000ミリ）程度しかありません。また、細菌の中でも「ミクロコッカス属」という種類は、同じく1つの細胞が0.5～3マイクロメートル程度しかありません。これらの微生物たちは、テラヘルツ帯でのみ生息する特異な生物相を形成しています。
